Nathan P. Short
Nathan primarily represents parties in natural resource damages (“NRD”) actions brought pursuant to federal and state laws. Nathan has been special environmental counsel to the State of New Jersey, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in their assertion of multi-million dollar NRD claims. Nathan is also working with Maryland on their evaluation of potential MTBE claims.
Nathan represents the State of New Jersey and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in their claims against the oil industry concerning the gasoline additive, methyl tertiary butyl ether (“MTBE”). These cases involve State-wide and Commonwealth-wide claims against dozens of oil companies involving thousands of contaminated sites.
In addition to litigating NRD and MTBE claims, Nathan has assisted parties in environmental torts, personal injury and commercial lease dispute suits.
Nathan previously served as a Law Clerk with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office in Rockville, MD and worked in U.S. Senator Evan Bayh’s office.
While in law school, Nathan worked with the Environmental Protection Bureau in the New York State Office of the Attorney General in Buffalo supporting work related to lead paint poisoning, the prosecution of the operator of contaminated potable water systems and research concerning NPDES permitting regarding ballast water discharge and invasive species.
Also, while in law school Nathan worked with the Neighborhood Legal Services’ Housing Unit, the Office of Legal Counsel for the Buffalo Public Schools, the Baldy Center, and the U.S. Dept. of Commerce’s Import Administration Division. In addition to his J.D., Nathan obtained a concentration in Financial Transactions.
Before practicing law, Mr. Short taught 8th grade English and served as a middle school Literacy Coach in the South Bronx.
